McCrone Associates’ Elaine Schumacher Named Director of the Microanalysis Society

Westmont, IL (February 20, 2012) – McCrone Associates, Inc.’s senior research scientist, Elaine Schumacher, was elected to the Executive Council of the Microanalysis Society (MAS), and will serve a two-year term (2012-2014) as one of six directors.

“I strongly support the ongoing efforts of MAS to define its role in the evolving world of microanalysis and its relationship with the Microscopy Society of America (MSA) and other professional societies,” said Schumacher. “As a director, I will work effectively to support MAS’s programs, its members and the larger microscopy community.”

Schumacher believes MAS should be a forum for exchange of theoretical and practical information for all microanalytical technique users. In addition, she is passionate about promoting the society through activities that keep MAS visible and relevant to students and professionals in the field.

Selected as a nominee by a president-appointed committee, Schumacher was voted to the position during a national election in December 2011.

Prior to being elected as director, Schumacher had long been active on the Executive Council of the Midwest Microscopy and Microanalysis Society, an affiliate of both MAS and MSA, serving as president, materials science director and program coordinator. She has also been an invited speaker at Microscopy and Microanalysis (M&M), Southeastern Microscopy Society meetings, and the MAS Topical Conference on Microanalysis of Particles.

Since 2001, Schumacher has been a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates, a materials analysis laboratory. There she applies transmission electron microscopy techniques, including high-resolution imaging, electron diffraction, x-ray microanalysis, and electron energy loss spectroscopy to materials as diverse as polymers, carbon nanotubes, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, minerals and ceramics.
